The 2009 tournament, staged on October 31 at the SFRC facility in Waigaoqiao, was contested across three divisions by 26 teams from around China and other parts of Asia. Singapore Bucks took out the Masters’ title for the second consecutive year, while Beijing Zhong Kui claimed the mixed division trophy and the Seoul Globetrotters won their maiden men’s open division title.
A sparkling Shanghai autumn day provided the perfect backdrop for the most intense and tightly contested matches seen at the tournament to date. Almost every game played during the knockout stage of the competition was decided by a single score, with most games being decided in extra time or via the lung-bursting player drop off method.
The Singapore Bucks pipped local side Odds and Sods, one of Shanghai’s original touch football teams, by three tries to one in the final of the Masters’ competition.
The first mixed division semi-final saw The Justice League, decked out in their superhero costumes, fall by a single point to Beijing side Zhong Kui. In the other semi, local side Koko B. Ware lost in the third minute of extra time to The Seoul Globetrotters. Zhong Kui went on to beat the Globetrotters by a single point in the mixed division final.
The Globetrotters and Zhong Kui met again in the Men’s Open final, but this time it was the team from South Korea that triumphed by three to nil. Earlier, The Seoul Globetrotters had pipped the Shanghai Wolverines by one point in their semi final while Zhong Kui triumphed over the Shanghai Hairy Crabs 3-0.
